Cataract SurgeryOur surgeons offer no-stitch cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation (IOL) performed at the Scottsdale Eye Surgery Center three blocks from our office. Cataract surgery is now an out-patient procedure, so you return home afterwards. Those living alone can almost always care for themselves without help from friends or family members. There are also very few restrictions in activity after the surgery. We use modern foldable acrylic lenses that can be placed through an extremely small incision, usually without the need for stitches. The surgery can usually be performed in a half hour or less. There is very little pain following the procedure-patients often do not need any pain medications afterwards. You may be eligible for a no-shot anesthesia technique (topical anesthetic), which is helpful if you use Coumadin or other blood thinners. This technique also does not require wearing a patch after surgery, which is helpful for those who are undergoing surgery on their only useful eye. Our surgeons are certified to implant multifocal intraocular lenses, such as the ReSTOR and ReZoom lenses. These lenses greatly increase the possibility that you could become free of glasses for both reading and distance vision after surgery. Astigmatism correction surgery can be performed during cataract surgery or in the office afterwards by the use of limbal relaxing incisions. Our surgeons are also certified to implant astigmatism correcting intraocular lenses (toric IOL's), although these are not yet available in the multifocal format. Glaucoma laser treatment during cataract surgery, or endocyclophotocoagulation (ECP), is offered by our surgeons. This treatment provides up to an 80% possibility that eye pressure could be lowered and/or fewer glaucoma medications needed after the surgery. Our office uses the IOL Master, an advanced technique for determining the proper intraocular replacement lens power, before cataract surgery. This machine greatly reduces the possibility of an incorrect implant lens power being used. We also perform a thorough dilated eye examination before surgery in order to look for potential problems that might be encountered during or after surgery. Please contact us for additional information not covered on this page.
